Women’s Day 2019 and Precious Memories — Sunday November 10 in Crockett

What are you doing Sunday?

Join us Sunday, November 10th from 11:30a-4p at the annual Bay Front Chamber Women’s Day Luncheon & Expo where the atmosphere is friendly, fun, and maybe even a little bit joyful. And definitely beneficial to your overall well-being!

Every year 400 business and community women gather together at the Crockett Community Center at 850 Pomona St in Crockett, to relax with wine and chair massages, reconnect with old friends, make new connections, accomplish some early holiday shopping, have a great lunch  together, and learn something to enrich their lives.

This year Author, Wanda Lee-Stevens and founder of BOOK YOUR LIFE bookshop will speak. Wanda believes that, “Every life is a series of books.” And that everyone has great stories to tell.

As women, we have historically been the gatekeepers and the space holders of the stories for our families. We co-create them, we curate them, we share them. And of course we can produce them in many book and book-like forms.

Whether your story is a sacred poem, a series of recipes, an enchanted essay, a photo journal or America’s next greatest novel, it can be done and it doesn’t have to be a daunting task. It can actually be a lot of fun!

You start with the vision, plan and hold the space and that is all you need to begin your journey to make it happen.

A tradition of this event is a mad scramble clothing exchange. Bring those fabulous clothes you just don’t wear, and pick up something new – it’s fun and free. Left over clothing and proceeds of the event are donated to the Grateful Garment Project, which provides victims of sexual violence the clothing and other resources they need to reclaim their dignity and begin the healing process.

This Bayfront Chamber event happens because of our generous Community Sponsors: Phillips 66, Crockett REC, Powder Keg Pub, Kelaire, Le Chat, and C&H.

Catering provided by Powder Keg Pub.

Register now. Don’t miss out! Tickets are $20 and are available through Eventbrite or at:

Arts Benicia Honors the Sierra Nevada with its New Show

Granite Spring  – oil painting by Rosemary Henze

  • WHEN: Opening Reception: Sat., Oct. 12, 6-8pm. Exhibit runs through Nov. 3, 2019 on Wednesdays- through Sundays each week, 12 – 5pm.
  • WHERE: Arts Benicia, 911 Tyler Ave in Benicia
  • WHAT: Uplift: Celebrating the Sierra Nevada.

Arts Benicia’s newest exhibition will showcase the visual imagery, science and rich cultural elements of the Sierra Nevada range, which defines the landscape of inner California, dictates its watershed and influences its culture and climate. These artworks, selected by Juror Jeanne Lorenz, represent or refer to the range’s terrain, ecology, geology, history, recreation and endemic species of plant and animals.

Granite Spring by artist Rosemary Henze is the first painting that she has ever entered into an exhibition. “ I didn’t have any inclination to enter my work in exhibits since I consider myself still in the midst of a big learning curve,” commented Rosemary.  “But one of my artist friends sent me the announcement about the exhibit in Benicia focusing on the Sierra Nevada.  Because the Eastern Sierra is deeply embedded in my family history and has always inspired me to paint, I decided to submit my most recent oil painting from that area.“

According to Rosemary, painting and drawing in the mountains deepens her appreciation of the natural world and offers her a way to quietly meditate even while others are around her. “In my recent work in the Eastern Sierras, I explore the idea that from our human standpoint, rocks seem so permanent, yet they move, change shape and form, dissolve or even become molten lava. Though the time scale is longer, they are not so different from us or from the plants that grow in the crevices.

Uplift: Celebrating the Sierra Nevada runs from Oct. 12 through Nov. 3 and the Benicia Arts Gallery is open Wed. – Sun. 12-5pm.

Tackling the World’s Plastic Pollution – One Marina at a Time. Seabin Project Launches Pilot Study.

It’s ready to go! Our friends at the Seabin Project designed and produced an automated rubbish bin that catches floating rubbish, oil, plastics, fuel and detergents. Seabins will be placed at docks in the world’s marinas as the first step to tackling water pollution. With a passion for protecting our oceans, bays and waterways, On the Bay partnered with Seabin Project in 2015 to shout out about their product. It has been a long time of R&D and building partnerships to help with their pilot study launch today. Their current partners for installation of the V5 ‘pre-series’ units include:

  • La Grande Motte, France
  • Porto Montenegro, Montenegro
  • Port Adriano, Spain
  • Wartsila Corporation – Helsinki, Finland
  • Butterfield Group – Hamilton Princess Marina, Bermuda
  • Safe Harbor Marinas – Cabrillo Isle Marina San Diego, USA

Safe Harbor Marinas manages two SF Bay Area marinas – Ballena Isle Marina in Alameda and Emeryville Marina in Emeryville. It is exciting that Safe Harbor Marinas, the largest owner and operator of marinas in the world, has stepped forward to embrace such an important environmental cause and project. The six pilot partners will each have a ‘pre-series’ V5 Seabin installed in the next few weeks. In the three-month pilot study, all six partners will not only monitor all aspects of the Seabins with the Team at Seabin Project, they will also participate in the implementation of the education, research and development programs.

Pete Ceclinski, co-founder

“For Seabin Project to enter into the North American market by partnering with the largest owner/operator of marinas in the world, it is pretty spectacular to say the least,” says Pete Ceglinski, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Seabin Project. “Not only does Safe Harbor Marinas hope to use our technology to improve water quality at their marinas, but they also plan to implement our educational programs. This means we could have the opportunity to make a compelling and positive impact on over 60 waterways and harbours across North America over time.”

You can now participate in the video launch of their global pilot study. The Seabin Project should gain a lot of excellent exposure  during the 35th America’s Cup starting next month in Bermuda. Congrats everyone!
