Hello and welcome to autumn in Emeryville on the Bay. Live here or thinking of visiting? Besides being only ten minutes away from San Francisco, host city of the 2013 America’s Cup, Emeryville has 2 marinas, 850 slips, 4 major hotels, over 80 fine dining restaurants, bakeries & cafes and lots of shopping – worldwide and boutique brands. Plus, there are unlimited ways to play here – from windsurfing, sailing and kayaking to hiking the Bay Trail & strolling the Emeryville ArtWalk.

Fall is one of my favorite times of year in Emeryville. I like walking around town and down through the marinas in the crisp air and feeling fortunate to live here. It’s now time to check out the City of Emeryville’s Fall 2014 Activity Guide and sign up for those classes you have been thinking about, be it Yoga, dance lessons or the fitness group with health coach Charlandra Savage who run, walk and jog down at the Marina Park on Wed. at 7pm. You can download the Activity Guide from the City’s website or pick up a copy at City Hall or the Senior Center.

Situated on the San Francisco Bay, Emeryville residents and employees are lucky to have access to all the beauty and water sports along our coastline. Please join us on Sat., Sept 20 is for the Annual International Coastal Clean Up Day
in Emeryville. We will meet at 9am next to the Fire Station at 2333 Powell St., across from the Watergate Market. Volunteers are treated to free refreshments, raffle prizes and chair massage from local
Emeryville businesses.

Bring your own re-usable water bottle, coffee cup, collection bag or bucket, garden/protective gloves and garden digging-claw.

See you at the Coastal Cleanup or around town.

PS You can catch up with me on Opening Night of the Emeryville Art Exhibition on Oct. 10 from 6-9pm, as I will be heading up the no-host bar to raise funds for the Emeryville Youth Art Program, which has been bringing artists into the Emery Unified School District now for three decades.

Ever imagined reading poems on the Emery Go Round? Now you can. Poetry in Motion launches in October with Poems from San Francisco Bay Area poets available on the Emery-Go-Round. Poetry in Motion, a Poet Laureate art initiative, is a partnership between the The City of Emeryville and the Emeryville Transit Management Authority (ETMA). Each month a new poem  will be printed and distributed on the buses for riders to read and take away. Poems submitted by Bay Area poets will surprise, delight and inspire readers. Janell Moon, an Emeryville-based poet will be the first poet honored on the Emery-Go-Round, as she was selected as the City’s first Poet Laureate for 2010-2012.

Sarah Kobrinsky was named the 2013-2015 Emeryville Poet Laureate for Oct. 15, 2013 until Nov. 2015. Poetry in Motion is one of Kobrinsky’s robust programs planned for her tenure. Others include:

  • Poetry Idol – a workshop for high school students with performances before supportive “judges” including teachers, poets. and local celebrities
  • Poetry & Play –  creative movement and poetry for elementary students
  • Poetry the Practice – writing workshops for adults at the library or senior center potentially culminating in book or public reading
