Over 100 artists who work or live in Emeryville will transform Grifols’ donated space at 5745 Peladeau St. in Emeryville into a living exhibit of paintings, sculptures, photographs, ceramics and textile arts. In its 29th year, running from Oct. 3-25, the show will again integrate poetry readings and dance performances into  Emeryville’s Annual Art Exhibit, celebrating the talent and creativity that abounds in this 1.2 square mile city.

“Every day hundreds of artists are working in Emeryville and this juried exhibition is their yearly showcase,” explains Sharon Wilchar, exhibition coordinator.  “The positive transformation of our city over the past 30 years is impressive. As a player in enhancing the cultural vibrancy of our city and engaging the community through the arts, Emeryville Celebration of the Arts is proud to have been a partner in this transformation.”

Along with the exciting collection of visual art , the 2015 Annual Emeryville Art Exhibition will host poetry readings with Emeryville’s Poet Laureate Sarah Kobrinsky, joined by poets Tim Donnelly, Salame Samiat, Kathleen McClung, Vernon Keeve III and others, and will culminate on the closing day with a site-specific dance performance by Emeryville dance troupe Nancy Karp + Dancers.  Calendar the schedule of readings and performances.

Luna Rossa Challenge Launches Second Foiling AC45 – Swordfish

big__MG_9288Both the Luna Rossa Piranha and Swordfish  are foiling about in Cagliari, after being modified with on-board systems that allow the AC45 catamarans to fully foil like the AC72s in the 2013 America’s Cup races. (take a look)

The new design protocol for the 35th America’s Cup allows for modifications of the AC45s of any sort, except for the shape of the hulls. Apparently these new catamarans will outperform the old ones and can simulate the sailing conditions of the new AC62s which will be used in the 2017 races. Practicing on the new AC45s will enrich the crews’ training program and better prepare them for maneuvers, boat handling and foiling techniques that will relate to the new AC62s. They are out at sea now testing all the boats’ components and systems in their full foiling modes.

“This is an important day for the team,” according to Max Sirena, skipper of Luna Rossa, “sailing with two boats offers a significant advantage not only for performance comparison but from all points of view. We participated in the last America’s Cup to set the basis for our 35th America’s Cup and now we can count on a solid team and a close collaboration between designers, sailing team and shore team. There is a constant exchange of information between these areas to address the design and optimize its applications.”

Emeryville’s Ex’pression College graduate Amanda Mantchev recently received an Emmy Award from the San Francisco/Northern California Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences for her graphic work on the Comcast SportsNet Bay Area video segment, 2013: A Year to Remember.

Amanda pursued a Bachelor’s Degree of Applied Science in Motion Graphic Design and graduated from Ex’pression in 2010, landing the job at Comcast after graduation with the help of one of her instructors.

“I worked hard,” says Mantchev. “Whether it’s at Ex’pression or in your job, you have to want to be there and be passionate. It doesn’t matter if you’re just working on making a Power Point presentation move or adjusting key frames, you have to find what you love about a project and be proud of it. There are no short cuts: it’s up to you to do the best job you can and put your education, training and creativity to good use.”

Smaller boats (but still lightening-fast foilers), only 7-9 crew, more common design elements, only four challengers from the World Series (ACWS) races in 2015-16 face off in SF during the Louis Vuitton and other ideas to cut costs and increase participation. Read more from Russell Coutts, Oracle TEAM USA member and AC’s most successful skipper, in the New Zealand Herald.
