“What would the world be like if women were safe?” is the questioned posed by San Leandro’s new public art piece Truth is Beauty. In ten different languages on the base we are asked to think deeply about how we can create environments where women feel safe.  Located on Westlake Urban’s San Leandro Tech Campus next to the BART station, tours of Truth is Beauty  are offered by the City of San Leandro and SLTC and led by trained community ambassadors (docents) who tell the moving story about the evolution of this exceptional piece of art and its creator Marco Cochrane.

Marco felt that this sculpture expresses the unleashed power women have in a world where they feel safe. Truth is Beauty is one of three pieces in Cochrane’s Bliss Project, all telling the story of bringing women’s energy in balance with men’s through respect, appreciation and protection. Truth is Beauty debuted at Burning Man 2013 on the playa, lighting up the desert sky to share her energy.

“I knew of Truth is Beauty because a lot of my friends were involved in Burning Man,” says San Leandro Chamber CEO and TIB docent Emily Griego. “So when Gaye Quinn, Westlake Urban Managing Partner and Chamber board member, shared her proposal to bring TIB here, I was thrilled. At the time, we had the fiber optic loop being installed, a new 3-d printing company moved into San Leandro and there was this whole vibe around the idea of San Leandro being showcased as a center for innovation and technology. And there was talk about SLTC bringing more tech companies into San Leandro, especially more women entrepreneurs in tech.” Illuminated by 2,500 LED lights Truth is Beauty and her message seem to be the perfect fit for San Leandro.

“My first tour was on a rainy Saturday,” continues Emily, “but all who signed up did

show up – with their umbrellas. They had wonderful questions because they all wanted to be around her! She is standing in a safe space. She feels all her ‘beautifulness’ in that space at that moment.” Participants receive ribbon bracelets at the end of the tour with Together We Stand inscribed on them. “We are all in this together, committing to one another to watch out for and keep each other safe.”

Truth is Beauty tours are offered on the next three Saturday mornings in December. Dec. 3, Dec. 10 or Dec. 17 at 11am. This is a free event. The tour lasts about an hour and the groups on tour are intimate – about 20 people.

“I think the success of the tours,” commented another docent, Naomi Porat, Alpha Group, “is attributable to the enthusiasm, gratitude and emotional response of the participants. They were all in love, and I mean seriously in love, with TIB and so grateful that she is a gift from Westlake to the City and its residents.  They expressed how they feel so lucky to have her in their own community. There were approximately 20 attendees, mostly from San Leandro.  The group was very diverse in terms of age (several kids, parents, older residents), ethnicities and about 50/50 male and female.  There was even a couple who traveled from Woodland (near Sacramento) for the tour!”

Join the community in this very important conversation as you learn Truth is Beauty’s story. Choose a date and meet at the SLTC at 1600 Alvarado St. in San Leandro.

San Leandro Transformed by Truth is Beauty

For over a year San Leandro has been anticipating the day, when this bigger-than-life 55-foot sculpture of a woman moves to her new home. Truth is Beauty will be arriving in Downtown San Leandro on Sat., Oct. 1 at 1pm at

the Plaza Bus Stop, 1233 E. 14th St.

She will be transported on a flatbed truck through town to her resting spot at the Westlake Urban Tech Campus next to the BART station. Weighing in at 13,000 lbs, this awe-inspiring stainless steel sculpture will light up the night sky with 2,500 LED lights.

Welcome ceremony attendees will be able to get up close and personal with Truth Is Beauty as she makes her way down E. 14th. The truck will pull into the recessed bus stop area on southbound E 14th street between Davis St. and Estudillo Ave. around 1 – 1:15pm.  The truck will be out of the street in the bus stop area for approximately 30 min., while the community can celebrate her arrival in the city of San Leandro.

Out on the sidewalk, officials will say a few words and sculptor Marco

Cochrane, Truth is Beauty’s creator, will talk to us about how this piece expresses the unleashed power women have in a world where they feel safe.

Marco Cochrane’s website describes the Bliss Project’s intentions:

“I believe the world is out of balance and that we need to listen to women’s voices and understand their intent.  They do not speak up as often as men.  I believe that one of the reasons for this is the systemic violence against women that has been present throughout history.  I think it’s time to take the next step in evolution, to actively create a safe environment for women and to take responsibility for our society.

Truth is Beauty and my other sculptures are intended to demand this change in perspective. They are intended to be catalysts for social change; to de-objectify women and express the basic truth of femininity, a truth that is dangerous for individual women to express.  They are a reminder of what we gain when we value women.  My hope is to inspire men and women to take action to end violence against women, thus allowing all of us to live fully and thrive.”

Marco captures 6 ft. model Deja Solis, who had always been self-conscious of her height, standing on her tip-toes, arms outstretched in a moment of self-acceptance and love.

“Truth is Beauty is transformative in the way she stands there and telegraphs to total strangers, ‘I am here, I am different, but I feel safe and feel accepted,'”  says Westlake Urban’s managing director Sunny Tong. “The San Leandro Community and the San Leandro Tech Campus together set a quality environment that communicates trust and accountability, and hopefully a sense of acceptance that this is where one feels comfortable, where one finds inspiration and where one can be productive and prosper.”

The negotiating and waiting process has taken about 18 months, but the campus is now ready and the foundation is complete. “I’m really excited about her becoming whole again (body, arms, head and shoulder).” Tong says assembly will likely take up to three days, starting on Monday, plus additional days testing her lighting system and programing.  Tong expects a crew of 5 to 6 will assemble TIB using a 100’ tall crane. (Video of assembly at Burning Man.)

Come down to Downtown San Leandro! Many places to eat and drink close by, including Peet’s and The Cooler, where you can bring in lunch from Taqueria Los Pericos.

Fashion Designer Turns Liquor Store Owner: Embrace Cordial Bottle Shop

IMG_1213The classic neon LIQUOR sign stays put. But the interior of the store is evolving. In a great way! Though the neighbors and new owners cherish this neon sign that lights up the corner as the evening progresses, they also welcome the interior shop changes.

How did this young couple come to buy this business at 1111 MacArthur Blvd in Feb. of 2016?

“I wanted to leave the apparel business, “ claims fashion designer and now liquor store owner, Stacey Tingstrom. “I have always wanted to run my own business. Something I could call my own.” Stacey has been working at North Face in design and production (which she loves) and is still there part time, though most of her heart is at her new store. How did she pick this business?

“Well, this store is close to my home and seemed like something I could manage. I looked at franchises – like LEGO’S® and SUBWAY®. But it still was not my own business. I had to follow their branding rules. I had to use their signage and verbiage to perpetuate their brand.”

Being a passionate designer with her own creative spirit, Stacey kept looking. And what spurred her on was the change happening in her San Leandro neighborhood – houses were selling for over $800,000– very close to this possible business opportunity on MacArthur that she had stumbled upon in her research.IMG_0335 2

”This business stood out. It was close to home. When I learned more, I knew exactly what business it was. And we just wanted to run our own business.” When she asked her husband, “How about we buy the liquor store? And he said to me, how about no!” Simon finally came around. He had been in the restaurant business in the past and is a craft cocktail mixologist in the present, so he brought that customer knowledge and expertise to the table.

Stacey made an offer in July and it was accepted in August of 2015.

IMG_1215Escrow closed Feb. 16, 2016, and that month they went in and dismantled one set of shelving and moved  their new freestanding display shelves they had created. The next month they took out another layer and Voila! – it was a changed place. Now, it is the Cordial Bottle Shop, exuding nuances of conviviality, and friendliness – a warm, beautiful and jovial place to spend time and find what you were looking for or something close to it.

It’s all about community. You will find neighbor Traci Ramos there working the shop or helping pull the visual displays together, as Traci is an interior design specialist. Cordial Bottle Shop’s strategy is to transform the store into a boutique shopping experience, yet maintain the corner store spirit with conversation and the lottery tickets! Stacey also aspires to becoming a boutique IMG_0338BevMo!, offering cheeses, deli meats and  crackers.  “I am trying to represent the neighborhood the way it is – we have craft beer and IPAs as well as Bud Light in the 24 oz cans. Our neighbors have a wide range of tastes and we hope to have something for everyone. I want to embody the neighborhood.”

Stacey and Simon live in San Leandro.

Hanging Out At The Cooler

40 spigots for beer on the wall. 40 spigots for beer. Where do you begin? With a tasting from a curated selection of local beers.  If you already know a beer you love, order the 16 oz. If not, ask for a tasting. You can order a 5 oz. or an 8oz also.

The Cooler opened its doors in downtown San Leandro to cater to all the craft beer enthusiasts in and around the greater Bay Area and to focus on local beers, wines and other drinks. They will be serving 25 local and regional beers on tap at a time and several wines, kombucha, bottled craft beer and High Wire Coffee Roaster’s Iced Coffee (deemed delicious by patrons).IMG_1039

Though not serving food at this time, you are welcome to bring in food from nearby restaurants. You can order from your phone for quick delivery! The Cooler also offers up the fastest WI-FI in downtown San Leandro, as it was the first to install a receiver inside for Downtown Wi-Fiber.

After a long search around the Bay Area, the three owners ended up in the downtown location through a referral from Drakes Brewing Co. Arne Johnson, Brewmaster at Marin Brewing, Jeff Botz from BJ’s Brewhouse and Eric Keyes, executive chef  at Kincaid’s and McCormick & Schmicks, joined together to launch this Tap Room venture and are pouring their beer and hearts into making it a great experience for their neighbors.

IMG_1028San Leandro wins. Besides three of the best of the top four East Bay Breweries – Cleophus Quealy, Drakes and 21st Amendment, plus two Brewpubs – The Englander and Harry’s Hofbrau,  Sons of Liberty Alehouse is opening up soon around the corner from The Cooler. We will have to start calling San Leandro “BeerTown” from now on.

The Cooler already has that established neighborhood watering-hole vibe, and patrons are friendly and eager to share their craft beer intelligence. According to young beer specialist Jamie Waldear, ” It’s only a few blocks from my house and they offer a superb selection of West Coast IPAs, of which my favorites have been Happy Hops by Russian River Brewing, Hella Hoppy by Altamont Brewery, Party Ghost by Cellarmaker Brewing and Limey Saison by Social Kitchen & Brewery with Marin Brewing. I tip my hat to these guys. They entered the San Leandro micro brew scene with a relaxed presence, yet a strong boldness in flavor and attitude.”
