Fishing Report: No Crab for Thanksgiving? Emeryville Sportfishing Chimes In

dungeness crabSportfishermen are anxiously awaiting the official opening of Dungeness crab season – originally slated for Nov. 7, 2015 – but the opening date has been pushed back. The delay is due to higher than normal levels of domoic acid found in the crab meat and viscera of Dungeness and Rock crabs. Domoic acid is produced by naturally occurring algae (Pseudo-nitschia), which can, if at dangerous levels, be toxic to human beings. This algae floats in the ocean near the surface soaking in sunlight to produce blooms serving as feed for whales and jellyfish, as well as shrimp. The remains fall to the bottom-feeding fish and crustaceans.

The CA State Departments of Fish & Game and Public Health and other agencies warn consumers not to eat any Rock or Dungeness crab caught along the coastline from Oregon to Santa Barbara until further notice. They are monitoring levels of domoic acid in the crabs and as soon as the levels subside, they will lift the warning.

UPDATE: Today, Nov. 5, The California Fish and Game Commission voted to postpone the opening of recreational crab season for up to six months. “The fisherman down at Emeryville Sportfishing are optimistic that the season will open much sooner. The State has the option to open it whenever they decide,” according to Emeryville Sportfishing’s owner Craig Stone.

Commercial Dungeness crab season was slated to open on Nov. 15. If that date gets pushed back too far, does that mean there will be no fresh Dungeness crab for Thanksgiving? No word yet on commercial crabbing opening date, though Stone believes it definitely is delayed. North West crab fisherman are fearful that the warnings against crab toxicity in the SF Bay will drive down prices and demand, though Seattle’s crabs are fine – way below the toxic level. Emeryville on the Bay will keep you posted. Or you can call the CDPH’s biotoxin phone line at (800) 553-4133.

Emeryville Sportfishing sent out two boats on Sun., Nov. 1, with 22 anglers catching 220 Rockfish and 66 Ling cod . (Salmon season closed on Sat., Oct. 31.) Emeryville Sportfishing is located in the Emeryville Marina at 3310 Powell Street in Emeryville, CA off Highway 80.  For printable driving directions from your location to Emeryville Sportfishing follow this link. On Mon., Aug 31, 25 anglers went out fishing in 1 Emeryville Sportfishing boat. Catch: 250 Rockfish and 10 lingcod.

On Sun., Aug 30, 6 boats went out with 109 anglers. Catch: 2 California Halibut, 12 Chinook (King) Salmon, 32 lingcod, 90 Pacific Mackerel, 150 Sanddab and 985 Rockfish.

Sanddab are prized for their delicate texture and flavor, though many people have never had the opportunity to savor this delectable fish.

Sandab must be in their plentiful stage now. On Aug. 28 four Emeryville Sportfishing boats caught 240 Sanddab and on the 25th, 3 boats went out and caught 250 Sanddab.

Preview of Woodcut Print Artist’s Entry

Café, woodcut, 2015, 21" x 23 1/2” - Linda Lee Boyd

Café, woodcut, 2015, 21″ x 23 1/2” – Linda Lee Boyd

Café, Linda Lee Boyd’s, 2015 entry in the Annual Emeryville Art Exhibit (Oct. 3-25), was inspired by her trips to Paris with her late husband. In 2010 she captured these people in a café near Sacre Coeur, showing the cosmopolitan diversity of the wonderful city of Paris.

Linda is a longtime supporter and board member of the Celebration of the Arts – since 1992 – as an entrant in the exhibit and as a volunteer. According to Linda, “The Annual Emeryville Art Exhibit is a real celebration of the arts of the residents and workers in Emeryville. For me, it’s a chance to exhibit as well as a way to work with the community.” Linda’s woodcuts are in the collection of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts at the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, the Janet Turner Print Museum in Chico and in the Fetterly Gallery collection at the Vallejo Community Arts Foundation. View more of her work.

“Linda Lee Boyd’s woodcut prints are a continuation of the figurative tradition. The most salient quality of Boyd’s woodcuts, aside from their technical finesse, is their personalness. What we are seeing is the quiet yet studied and thoughtful work of an artist who lives in an ordinary, day-to-day world inhabited by ordinary day-to-day people. Subjects are chosen and then rendered from a time consuming and labor-intensive process of woodblock printing to become anything but ordinary. Boyd’s technical abilities as an artist are readily apparent; her work has been described as ‘sonnets in wood.’ It is perhaps her ability to take her friends and co-workers and create poetry from them that is her highest achievement. “ Daniel Robesky, Curator & Director, Fetterly Gallery, Vallejo, CA

Artemis takes 1st place in Race 3. Kiwis win Race 4 and event title.

Artemis Racing’s skipper Nathan Outteridge and crew were exuberant as they finally took 1st place in Race 3 Sunday in their hometown Gothenburg, Sweden, to the cheers of all their fans. ETNZ took 2nd and Land Rover BAR 3rd. Oracle was in 4th. Double points’ racing weighs heavily in Sunday’s races. At the end of Race 3 ETNZ, BAR and USA are tied overall for the America’s Cup Louis Vuitton World Series Event 2 with 34 points each.

Lighter winds prevailed and there was no foiling, as boats can’t generate enough speed to make the foils work. Getting to the first mark is all about what angle will get you there faster. Tacticians have to determine to go with the wind or against the wind and take advantage of every shift. Code 0 (larger sail for downwind) sails play a vital role on days like this, as does positioning on the boat – shifting weight as the environment changes. Anticipating winds by studying dark spots (puffs in the water) is key.

Race 4 had a little more wind and the start ended up pretty even except for Artemis in last. Commentators said that in conditions like today’s, “You are a hero one minute and a goat the next.“  Oracle was out in front and then in leg 3 the wind shifted and their lead just evaporated in a quick minute. Japan took the lead. Meanwhile, New Zealand was making huge gains. And in one more wind shift, ETNZ was in the lead sailing very well, positioning weight on the boat as they adjusted to the weird winds. Tactician’s judgment was key.

Vuitton World Series. In Race 4 Softbank Japan takes 2nd place and they are a brand new team. Groupama Team France takes 3rd and they too have a new crew learning to work together. Oracle Team USA takes 4th (really stings after winning two first places in Sat.’s races) with BAR in 5th and Artemis last. “That was brutal,” said Jimmy Spithill, as Oracle crossed the line (on-board audio).

Event 3 of the World Series regattas will take place Oct. 16-18 in Bermuda, host of the 35th America’s Cup Match.

Summary of event 2 in Gothenburg, Sweden:

Place Team Points

1st – Emirates Team New Zealand – 54

2nd – ORACLE TEAM USA – 48

3rd –  Land Rover BAR – 46

4th – Softbank Team Japan – 43

5th – Artemis Racing – 42

6th – Groupama Team France – 37

Overall World Series Summary, Events 1 & 2:

1st – Emirates Team New Zealand –72

2nd – Land Rover BAR – 65

3rd – ORACLE TEAM USA – 64

4th –Softbank Team Japan – 56

5th – Artemis Racing – 53

6th – Groupama Team France – 50

The Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series runs over two years – 2015 and 2016. The winner of the series will carry two points forward into the round robin phase. Second place in the series carries one point. At the end of the round robin, any ties will be broken using these results. That means the AC World Series could determine which team receives the bonus point for the America’s Cup Match and which team is eliminated.
