Folkboat Party Livens Up Tiburon Yacht Club

Member Hosts and longtime Folkboaters Jim Bliss and Otto

TYC Member Hosts and longtime Folkboaters Jim Bliss & Otto Schreier

Tiburon Yacht Club members Otto Schreier and Jim Bliss hosted the annual San Francisco Bay Folkboat Association‘s awards party at their club. Located on the quiet side of the Tiburon-Belvedere peninsula, the clubhouse offers a large room for members to hold events with a fireplace, kitchen and great deck with views opening to the water. Filling up the space with animated storytelling, this fun community of sailors quieted down after their spirited dinner, to acknowledge the 2016 racing season winners and their Folkboats.

The Nordic Folkboat has been sailed and raced on San Francisco Bay for over 50 years, making it one of the oldest one design fleets on the Bay. There are reasons for this success. The design enables it to thrive in the heavy conditions the Bay dishes out all summer long and the SFBFA is a skillful and committed group of sailors who enjoy racing as much as the camaraderie offered by the group. They race from April to October on San Francisco Bay and honor their fleet winners at the close of each season.

“Part of Folkboat continued success,” according to Mickey Waldear, Freja crew member, “is due to the international Folkboat family. With Gold Cup events in Europe every year and a invitational regatta in San Francisco Bay every other year.” The Gold Cup is considered by some to be the ‘unofficial’ World Championship of the Nordic Folkboat Class. The SFBFA belongs to the Nordic Folkboat International Association and participates in these annual regattas.

Runners up in 2016,  Folkboat #111, Freja with Tom Reed and crew. Rumor had it they lost by only 1/2 a boat length. The 2016 season first place winners were Folkboat #113, Polperro with Peter Jeal & crew.

The Nordic Folkboat was designed as a clinker built wooden sloop in 1942 by the Scandinavian Yacht Racing Union (SYRU). The first Nordic Folkboat was built in Göteborg in Sweden. In the late 1960s, a GRP version was design licensed to a few boat builders (NFIA website). The first Folkboats appeared in 1955 on San Francisco Bay and the group created the SFBFA in 1957. The SFBFA hosts races on Wed. nights (mid-week stress relief) and weekends during the season.

As of 2016, more than 4000 Nordic Folkboats have been built around the world (NFIA). Though they are small boats with a length of 7.68 m or 25.20 ft., some enthusiasts have even crossed the Atlantic in one.

Love to Sail? Sail for Love & Cure Cancer!

Join The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for the 2016 Pacific Union Leukemia Cup Regatta!

The Pacific Union Leukemia Cup Regatta event will take place on Oct. 22 – 23, 2016, at The San Francisco Yacht Club 2015 Leukemia Cup(SFYC) in Belvedere, CA. This fun weekend kicks off with the 2nd Annual Perkins Corporate Challenge on Sat., Oct. 22 at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. The Challenge is followed by the VIP Dinner in the evening at the SFYC, featuring special guest speaker Ethan Zohn*, former American professional soccer player, CBS Survivor: Africa winner, two-time lymphoma crusher and philanthropist. He gives new meaning to the word survivor, according to SF Leukemia Cup Regatta Sr. Campaign Manager, Jennifer Daly. Word on the water is that the VIP dinner is always a huge success!2015 Leukemia Cup

On Sun., Oct. 23, the Pacific Union Leukemia Cup Regatta will begin with a Sponsor Breakfast at 10am at the SFYC and boats will board at approximately 11:30am. There will also be a Cruising Class on-the-water parade and an awards celebration with a BBQ. Supporters are registering their boats for this fun regatta because it is a meaningful event and many know someone who had or has a blood cancer. There is a great spirit of fundraising among the skippers, their crews, SFYC and spectators.

“I first got involved when one of my yacht club friends told me his 8 year old was sick with a rare blood disease,” explained Bill Smith with Pacific Union and Christie’s International Real Estate. “At the time I was Rear Commodore of our yacht club (The San Francisco Yacht Club) and had been involved on the race council. He was 2015 Leukemia Cupaware of LLS having a regatta and asked if I could help get the YC to participate. I did, joined the committee (was co-chair the year we hit the $1,000,000 mark) and in 2006 we had our first regatta. The club jumped all over it and each year we did it, we had enormous success. The member’s son was our honorary skipper until the year I wanted to find other survivors and we made them honorary skippers too. The young boy (Campbell Nolan) is now 18 and off to university, healthy as can be.” Bill commented that if it were two decades ago with that rare blood disease, Campbell may not have been here today.

John Arndt with Latitude 38 sailing magazine also got involved in the very first regatta. “I’ve raced our Ranger 33 ’Summer Sailstice’ almost every year.  Like a runner running for a cause, it is a great opportunity to engage in your favorite pastime while also doing good for the world and your community. Of course, any chance to sail the Bay makes for a good day, but ultimately what makes participating in the Leukemia Cup so important is the impact it has on people you know. Renowned sailor Gary Jobson and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society have done a great job engaging the sailing community to support the cause.”

Leading up to the October regatta, LLS launched their inaugural Leukemia SUP (Stand-up Paddle Boards) Cup on Aug. 7, 2016, along the Tiburon waterfront. “After 10 years of running the most successful Leukemia Cup Regatta in the country, which is hosted annually in October by the San Francisco Yacht Club, ” according to SUP participant Stan Hales, ”LCR committee members have added the new SUP event to reach a wider audience of those who have a personal connection to someone with blood cancer and want to contribute.” Hales, a member of the SFYC, has been on the LCR committee for  five years.

About the LLS’s Leukemia Cup RegattaSM

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Leukemia Cup RegattaSM is a thrilling series of sailing events that combines the joy of boating with the important task of raising money to cure cancer. Since its inception, the Leukemia Cup Regatta has raised millions of dollars for lifesaving research and patient services, bringing help and hope to patients and their families.

At events held at yacht clubs across North America, skippers register their boats and recruit friends and colleagues to help crew and to raise funds. Crewmembers seek donations from friends, family, co-workers and employers to sponsor their boat. National and local event sponsors also support the Leukemia Cup Regatta.

The local San Francisco Leukemia Cup Regatta is hosted by the San Francisco Yacht Club, and is organized by the Greater Bay Area Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Now in its 11th year, our local event has consistently been the nation’s top fundraiser.
