“Plein air painting in the Bay Area captured my interest upon my very first classes with Anne Marie Glover and her mother, the late great landscape painter, Pam Glover. They introduced me not only to the joy of painting outdoors, but the rich legacy of East Bay painters such as The Outsiders, Lundy and Louis Siegriest and the Society of Six. With every painting, I try to find that sweet spot where the beauty of the scene meets the lush dimensional qualities of the oil paint itself.” –Maria SantoStefano

Marie Massey’s painting was featured on the Alameda May 2021 Trail Guide cover.

Cover art: The Red Umbrella 12”x12”, oil on hardboard. Private collection.

“As an avid plein air painter for 23 years, I find water fascinating and fun to paint. I love the transparency, the reflective quality, and the movement of water. Alameda is a town rich with inspiration for the plein air painter and I was inspired by this lagoon-side home. It was great fun to paint with its distinctive architecture, bright garden with a stately King Palm, and its brilliant red umbrella reflecting in the waters of the Grand Street Lagoon.” –Marie Massey, winner of the Frank Bette Center for the Arts 2021 PAPO Award

“The California landscape has always comforted me, with its soft, sensual rolling hills. My challenge is not to paint what I see, but to express my interpretation of the landscape through color, shape and perspective. The process of creating art has become a passion for me and I am thankful to have found a positive outlet.” —Clorinda Smith
