The Experience, Emeryville: Bay St Openings

The Experience:

The Trophy Club @ Tipsy Putt!

It feels like a retro style bar that hints at the historical Speakeasy era, reminiscent of the old Townhouse in the days of old in Emeryville. Owners Brandon and Jennifer Robinson have created an adult ‘drinkertaiment’ concept with three brands – Tipsy Putt taproom, Mini-golf and the Trophy Club lounge hidden inside Tipsy Putt.

The Tipsy Putt bar serves up 40 taps of local craft beer including Emeryville’s own Wondrous Brewing beer, as well as tasty bites – tacos, nachos and more. Their mini golf course is challenging and great fun for groups, young ones until 5pm and 21+ after 5. Mayor John Bauters and vice mayor Courtney Welch celebrated their Grand Opening on Jan 31.

Fans gathered yesterday, February 8, for the opening of the Trophy Club, your new go-to place for cocktails.

“The beauty of the Trophy Club,” explained member and fan of the Sacramento Tipsy Putt’s Trophy Lounge, Shane Bharat, “is that it’s low key and chill. You have a purpose when you are here. At the very beginning of the Sacramento Trophy Club, I literally came for a Coca Cola that they made from scratch.  I have always felt very welcome and love what they do for members. Love their events.”

Memberships and events are now available in Emeryville! Visit soon, take a tour and learn about the benefits.

Valentine’s @ the Trophy Club means Chocolate Grenache on fresh long stemmed strawberries. Plus more delectable bites and drinks. Current Bites offered include Charcuterie Board, Cheese Board, Chef’s Board – both meat and cheese – and Baguette & Marinated Olives with House-Made Giardirniera. This menu will evolve!

What they’re serving is unique with house-made syrups (banana & simple syrups), house-dehydrated fruit garnishes, fresh juices, fresh herb infusions (rosemary infusion) and more. They even make their own grenadine in house. And Valentine drinks are on the bar menu until the end of the month!

Bitter Taste of Love – Gin, Campari, crème de mure and orange bitters. Strong, bitter, semi-fruity.

Love Me Tender – Ramazzotti Aperitivo, vodka, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup (house-made) egg white and angostura bitters. Refreshing, floral, silky.

White Wedding – Blanco tequila, fresh squeezed lime juice,m kumquat liqueur, Licor 43, ginger beer and cream. Fruity, creamy, effervescent.

All cocktails are curated by their mixologists, Josh & Marqui. Get down there and meet them at the Trophy Club! And then try your hand at mini golf and check out their 40 beers on tap. You’ll find Tipsy Putt & Trophy Club at the north end of Bay St (5690) across from Hyatt Place. (510) 356-8222.

Missing Bucci’s at Lunchtime? Maybe Not Any More. 612one Opened its Doors in Emeryville!

Welcome to 612one Fusion Culinary & Fine Cocktails. The brick interior and high industrial ceilings are the same as in the long run of Bucci’s, but the look is now a polished modernism with metal tables and a sleek bar. The kitchen has been reconfigured so the dining room space seems a lot more airy and can seat more guests.

But what is really different is the soft opening menu. It’s a fun take on Asian Fusion, as both owners come from Thai restaurant backgrounds. For example, their Wasabi Calamari is lightly breaded calamari rings with an aioli-wasabi type dipping sauce. Crisp Roasted Pork Belly is served with tamarind curry and French baguettes. A great place after work for appetizers!

And the focal point is the beautiful bar. It makes you want to have a cocktail party with your friends there. Besides six beers on tap, bottle beer and wine, 612one offers up some great cocktails. There’s the Dirty Hollis made with The Real McCoy Aged Rum, coffee liqueur and lime or the 612one Negroni with St. George Botanivore Gin, St. George Bruto Americano and Carpano Antica Formula Vermouth. Spicing things up is  the T-Mex made with Hornitos Resposado Tequila, Tamarind and Paprika.

More choices with the Bar Menu. Hot Honey Wings – crispy chicken wings caramelized with organic honey and Sriracha (hot chili) sauce, Basa Fish and Chips with Cajun French Fries and 612one Dynamite – the  Dynamite is fresh shrimp and salmon topped with spicy miso soy, chili, garlic, lime and coriander.

The lunch menu  has a Grilled Chicken Burger and a Spicy Linguine Pasta with salmon, garlic, asparagus, mushrooms and basil. A Grilled Prawn Salad with spicy chili lime can be paired with their Rib Eye steak on the dinner menu. According to patrons, the Spicy Pasta Basil is a hit – Stir-fried linguini pasta and jumbo prawns with chili, garlic, asparagus, mushrooms and sweet basil. All very creative combinations of fresh food. Since they are still in their ‘soft opening’ phase, you can let the proprietors, Rawitpan Ussawagasemjit (Ohm) and Gary Srisawat (Chef), know your favorites. Their hours are easy to remember: 11am-10pm Mon. – Sat. (510) 285-6854

Summer Drinks at Skates

Amerafine

Amerafine

Skates on the Bay’s Mixologist Rob McCarthy has concocted four new cocktails for your summertime bliss, including one made with seasonal basil and others with bitters or citrus.

  • Amerafine – Campari, housemade vermouth, celery bitters & soda
  • Lower East Side – Woodford Rye, housemade vermouth, rhubarb bitters
  • Dismantled H2O Melon Punch – St. George Botanivore gin, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, 5 spice
  • Tortuga – Mt. Gay rum, lime juice, brown sugar-basil syrup

Summer Beer:  Hailing from Portland, OR, Widmer Hefe Shandy Seasonal Ale – the original American hefeweizen gets a bold new citrusy aroma and flavor from lemon drop hops and natural lemonade flavor

Summer Wine: Bieler Pere et Fils Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence ‘Sabine’ Rose – aromas and flavors from savory lavender and rosemary to rose petal notesto citrus, wild raspberry and tart cherries

How does Rob come up with these cocktails?

“Crafting cocktails is all about knowing which techniques to use, and when to use them. Do I over caramelize the sugar in the house vermouth or do I add more bittering agents to bring out the flavor profile that I want.

“The most important thing is that I am in complete control of each ingredient and how it tastes in order to impart the final profile that I am after.

But where do the ideas for a new a cocktail come from? Rob says that sometimes a sensational meal inspires him to create a drink to pair with it. Or sometimes there is a happy accident that makes the cut.

“Sometimes I learn a new technique or come across a new ingredient and find several ways to exploit them. For instance, when I learned how to make vermouth I also made several different ones with completely different profiles and a drink or two for each one. ” Happy mixing, Rob.
