Who Won the Shortest Triathlon Ever in the 70+ Class at Emeryville Day on the Bay?
The first place winner in the 70+ is Bob Bruce, a Senior Associate with WJE (Wiss, Janney Elstner Associates) at 2000 Powell St., close to the 
Emeryville Marina where he received his tie-dyed medal Saturday with a time of 56:46. “I think I have come to every one of these,” he said. “But this is the best medal!” The 2018 Shortest Triathlon Ever celebrated its tenth year Saturday, March 24 and was once again managed by On Your Mark Events in collaboration with the City of Emeryville.
“It was an invigorating swim,” commented Mayor John Bauters who only had a sleeveless wetsuit, “and if I had been tired before the swim, I was certainly awake afterwards!” Bauters is already planning ahead for next year’s Shortest Tri.
Winning first place overall for men was Marin Rodriquez #313, with 29:49 and first place overall all for women was Rhea Sanchez #314, with 34:22. “Emeryville Day on the Bay was a great success this year,” continued Mayor Bauters. “I am grateful to all the small businesses and community partners who worked with the steering committee and me to make this event possible. Roughly 500 people attended and we look to grow this event next year. I want to thank Vice Mayor Ally Medina and Council members Dianne Martinez, Scott Donahue and Christian Patz for the strong support of community events like Emeryville Day on the Bay. I am also proud that all of them participated in the World’s Shortest Triathlon with me!”
Emeryville Day on the Bay is a dog friendly event
The end of the race dovetailed into the beginning of Emeryville Day on the Bay. And it was a beautiful day on the Bay. Fish Emeryville’s fishing boats were open for tours and rides as 510 Waterline introduced lots of guests to Stand Up Paddle boarding down on the docks in Emeryville Marina. There was great food from Public Market Emeryville including Hot Italian’s Pizza and Shiba Ramen’s Spicy Ramen. City Manager Carolyn Lehr was impressed with the crowd, “There is not one empty table!” She then proceeded to convince the band to invite The Mayor to showcase his Irish Step Dancing to a cheering crowd. Ivy Hill Entertainment kept belting their tunes luring many of the sailors down in the marina out to the party.The Periodic Table hosted the Beer Garden along with the Blue Water Foundation. Beer was donated by local brewers Altamont Beer Works, Gilman Brewing Co., Novel Brewing Co. and Triple Voodoo Brewing. The Watergate HOA manned the water stand for the race and the US Coast Guard Auxillary taught guests about how they certify life jackets. An important element for a doggie life jacket is to make sure it is insulated to protect against icy cold water.

In its second year, Emeryville Day on the Bay, a community celebration of Emeryville’s marina district and its history, expands to include The City of Emeryville’s 10th Annual Shortest Triathlon Ever, great food from Public Market Emeryville and more. (Public transportation tips below)
The Periodic Table is hosting the Beer Garden. “Shiba Ramen and The Periodic Table are thrilled to 
participate in this year’s Day on the Bay,” says Jake Freed of the husband/wife owner team. “It’s a terrific chance for us, as well as the other Public Market Emeryville vendors, to get out in the community and let everyone know about the dining and drinking hub we’re creating at the Market. Emeryville’s Shortest Triathlon Ever (#shortesttriever) starts down in the Emeryville Marina for a 100 yd. swim in the San Francisco Bay, 3.5 mi bike ride around the marina and a 2 mi run that ends at the Marina. Athettes are invited to celebrate Fish Emeryville’s fishing fleet, watersports and the Emeryville water life style during the Emeryville Day on the Bay party. More info. at On Your Mark Events.
The Shortest Triathlon Ever is so short, anyone can do it!
- You can register for the Shortest tri the morning of the event. Registration opens at 7:30am.
- The Watergate Home Owners Association will be manning the water stand on the Bay side of Powel by the Police Station.
- Fish Emeryville will sponsor one free beer for each adult athlete at the after party
This is a free family event. According to Kate Pearson, West Coast vice president at Safe Harbor Marinas, operator of Emeryville Marina, “Everyone is invited to join in the festivities and discover the Marina District’s many thriving businesses and attractions. It promises to be a very fun day for the East Bay.”

Limited parking is available at the marina and will be free for Day on the Bay on March 24th, 2018.Public Transportation is highly recommended!
Take AC Transit, BART to MacArthur Station, or take Amtrak to Emeryville Station, then hop on the free Emery Go Round shuttle for service right to the marina! The Emery Go Round’s Shellmound/Powell line makes multiple stops at convenient locations throughout the city, including:
- MacArthur BART – STOP #1. Special event service will feature three additional shuttles departing from MacArthur Station at 6:30 am, 7am and 7:30 am in addition to regular service beginning at 8:20 am.
- Amtrak – STOP #25

Emeryville’s Shortest Triathlon Ever Merges With Emeryville Day on the Bay!
In its second year, Emeryville Day on the Bay, a community celebration of Emeryville’s marina district and its history, expands to include The City of Emeryville’s 10th Annual Shortest Triathlon Ever, Peet’s Coffee, ‘A Taste of Emeryville Public Market Restaurants’, a Beer & Wine Garden, Fishing Boat Tours and Rides, Ferry Rides, Stand Up Paddle Lessons, Live Music, Emeryville Artists a’ Painting, Jump House, Fishing, Passport & other activities for kids, including Introductions to Safety on Boats.
On Saturday, March 24 from 10am – 2pm, lots of information will be available for you to learn about Emeryville and get involved in your community, including tours of a fire truck and rescue boat. Come meet your neighbors at this friendly fun community event. Even if you live farther away. It is going to be a great day on the SF Bay! And a fit one also.
This year, Emeryville’s Shortest Triathlon Ever heads to the Bay! A Fun Emeryville Day on the Bay!

Even with overcast weather, over 200 people showed up to take tours of the fishing boats, take ferry rides and otherwise immerse themselves in the beauty of the grounds at the two marinas in Emeryville looking out to the San Francisco Bay.
The Jump House at one point had a dozen kids in it with the same amount of jackets and sweaters scattered on the grass. Fishing was a big hit all day long. Mayor Scott Donahue and City Manager Carolyn Lehr both enjoyed the inaugural Emeryville Day on the Bay event and hoped there would be more to come.

It really was a dog convention at the marinas that Saturday! Dogs were even invited on board the fishing boats for a tour. One dog, first mate Niko, was seen on a paddle board drifting around the marina. He is the mascot for Barbary Ghost nautical adventures. Another big hit were the free ferry rides on PROP, which offers commuter rides from the docks of Emeryville Marina to San Francisco.
Face painting had young children sitting patiently while their faces started brimming with colors and sparkles. Some young girls even wore their princess dresses Saturday and headed straight to the face painting table. 
Fishing rod demos, nautical knot tying lessons by the Emeryville Yacht Club, tours of Emery Cove Yacht Harbor and Emeryville Marina, Emeryville fire truck & rescue boat, gourmet food trucks and more! Don’t miss next year’s Spring event! And bring your dog.
