The Experience, Emeryville: Trader Vic’s Tiki Mugs

The Experience:

Happy 90th Birthday, Trader Vic’s!

If you have ever been to Trader Vic’s, it is definitely a different world with all the carved statues of the ancestors (tiki) and elaborate carved mugs lining up the bar. And the Chinese Wood-fired Ovens  add an ancient cooking method dating back to the Han Dynasty, with dishes like yum Indonesian Rack of Lamb.

How did this all start? Vic ‘The Trader’ Bergeron opened up Hinky Dinks on San Pablo in 1934. The Trader’s global travels led him to transform the saloon into an island-inspired bar. After inventing and popularizing the rum-based Mai Tai, Trader Vic’s opened on the waterfront in the Emeryville Marina and engaged the world in global delights adding Chinese dishes to the their contemporary Continental Cuisine. Maybe the first fusion menu! Today there’s an ever-evolving menu featuring dishes from the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Asia and Japan.

So, here’s to 90 years of iconic Tiki madness! Trader Vic’s has a definite Tiki Mug following. Discover what it is about the mugs and meet the Mug Makers. Join the crew on Saturday, February 24 at 6pm for a spirited discussion and a sneak preview of the movie Cabali & the Mug Obsession with Director Josh Dragotta. If you are a collector of tiki mugs, you will want to be there for the two new Trader Vic’s mug releases.
