50 Days until the Start of the America’s Cup!

As the 35th America’s Cup starting date closes in, teams are struggling to determine which design adjustments will give them that edge they need to win the oldest sporting trophy. They watch each other closely out on the water in Bermuda hoping to see or overhear each other’s strategies and techniques.

This is a time when the Regatta Director has to be truly independent.

“My bosses are all of the teams,”  says America’s Cup Race Management’s (ACRM’s) Iain Murray, Regatta Director of the 35th America’s Cup. Read more about Iain’s role here. Iain was also the Regatta Director for the 34th America’s Cup that took place in San Francisco.

Teams are now permitted to train on specific days that remain before the first races of the round robin America’s Cup Qualifiers.

Kiwis Win AC World Series Regatta in NYC!

What unbelievable races today! A continually changing case of who’s in first (check out the first leg of Race 1). Big wind shifts, changing currents and then a lucky puff of wind propelled Emirates Team New Zealand to the finish line in Race 3 to win the NYC Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series regatta.  ETNZ now maintains its lead in the LVACWS with 52 points and an overall of 244. ORACLE Team USA placed second with 50 points and an overall of 236, followed by Groupama Team France (44), Softbank Japan (42), Land Rover BAR (42) and Artemis Racing (40).

Overall ETNZ is in 1st place, followed by ORACLE in 2nd and BAR in 3rd. An exciting day on the Hudson River waterfront in NYC.

Due to the elements, the Hudson was an unpredictable, challenging racecourse venue, and at the same time  beautifully situated against the Manhattan skyline. Over a hundred thousand spectators showed up over two days to witness the return of the America’s Cup racing to NYC after 96 years.

Fun highlights:

  • Dramatically shifting winds and unpredictable conditions mirrored by Artemis Racing winning 1st and Groupama Team France finishing 6th in Race 1 and then in Race 2 Groupama finishes 1st and Artemis came in 6th.
  • Key to success in Race 1 win for Artemis Racing may have been communication – seating the tactician (Ian Percy) next to the skipper according to Nathan Outteridge, “We were yelling at each other. Rather than shouting back and forth, we can sit next to each other and chat.”
  • Race committee expected 20 knot winds and designed a nine leg course. Day 1 of racing and the winds did not even reach 5 knots. Day 1 of racing was canceled. Day 2 the winds were confused and just puffed up whenever and wherever they wanted. Race 1 on Day 2 took so long that the race committee cut the course almost in half – from 9 legs to 5 legs and then had to skew the whole race course around.

The day went on and the Kiwis still lead the LVACWS which will grace the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago –  another USA non-traditional venue – June 11 and 12. Stay tuned!

I rooted for France today as they had a major win that they have not seen in a very long time (Watch leg 1 of Race 2).  Of course they were pumped  – according to their tweet #FranckIsDriving #TeamSpirit. Franck Cammas, Skipper of Groupama Team France, returned to his team after a long rehabilitation from an accident that almost required his foot to be amputated. He steered his team into a first place win. Vive la France! More photos.

Despite a penalty and collision with Groupama Team France on Racing Day 1 and two penalties at the start on Racing Day 2, Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR maintained their lead and win the America’s Cup World Series event in Oman.

Today’s wins position Land Rover BAR 2 points ahead of ORACLE TEAM USA in Oman and 1 point behind them overall (see below).

Overall Results from the weekend races in Oman:

  2. ORACLE TEAM USA                  74

  4. Groupama Team France         68
  5. SoftBank Team Japan              61
  6. Artemis Racing                        56

The six contenders for the 2017 America’s Cup went into this weekend’s regatta with the following scores from the 2015 World Series races with overall 2015-16 running totals as of the end of today:

  1. Emirates Team New Zealand         122 (192)

ORACLE did close the gap overall going from 10 behind ETNZ to only 6 points behind and at the same time, Land Rover BAR moved from 3 behind ORACLE to only 1 point behind them overall. Beating out ORACLE TEAM USA, Groupama Team France took their first victory in the America’s Cup in race 6, which thrilled this new “underdog” team. They had not scored higher than a 3rd place all through 2015 and in race 5 won a 2nd place spurring them on  to their 1st place win.

NBCSN will air the highlights of the Oman regatta on March 12 at 6pm. The six contenders will  meet up again in New York for the New York Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series regatta on the Hudson River. They will race on the Lower Hudson against the Manhattan skyline May 7 and 8. The New York event will be the second of six World Series events planned for 2016 as the best sailors in the world compete for points that affect their position in the 2017 America’s Cup.

It was history-in-the-making with Oman hosting the races this year – the first time the Middle East has participated in the entire history of the America’s Cup.
